My name is Bob Danna, and I am not who you think I am. I know what I look like. I know that many today would dismiss me as “just another Boomer.” But I look around and wonder what happened to curiosity. Especially because I see it so clearly in my grandchildren. When do we lose our instinctual curiosity? And what would happen if we could rediscover what we already knew when we were younger: that curiosity is the key to a meaningful life. That’s why I wrote this book.

I invite you into my story, and my hope is that these reflections, calls to action, and hard-earned insights might rekindle in you the most powerful force known to humankind… curiosity.

Why I wrote this book

I wouldn’t have written this memoir ten years ago. This collection of stories, reflections, calls to action, and hard-earned insights is a direct response to a very particular stimulus: my grandkids.

They are still young, but one of my favorite things in this world is to watch them grow - from tiny creatures that barely filled my hands to

They are still young, but one of my favorite things in this world is to watch them grow - from tiny creatures that barely filled my hands to self-propelled little humans who have actual agency and insatiable curiosity.

Their physical presence has changed me. The curiosity that comes so naturally to them—to all children, really—brings me immeasurable joy. At the same time, I fear their curiosity will wane, or be squashed out of them by the pressures of this accelerating world.

Of course—and I’m sure many of you fellow grandparents reading this now will knowingly nod along with me—their youth also serves to remind me that I’m getting older. I refuse to say I’m old, but as a scientist and engineer, I understand I’m aging.

I invite you to step into their shoes and remember what it was like to listen to your own grandfather. Read my book as though you and I are two generations apart but entirely matched in curiosity.

I think I know who I am. You and my grandkids may reach very different conclusions once I tell you my stories, but this is the way I would describe myself to someone who does not know me, or even more importantly, to someone who thinks they do know me.

- A physicist, an engineer, a naval officer, a business leader, an intellectual, and one of the most curious people that you may ever meet.

- A grandfather, father, partner, and friend and colleague to many good people that I have met during my journey.

- Healthy and vital man for my age. Genes, chance and luck only get you so far. I still put in the work every day.

- Continuing to contribute my wisdom, expertise, and energy to my business ventures, personal interests, and community.

- A hard worker and driven to succeed and please. I often do this to excess.

The Values and Guiding Principles that I try to live by have been developed, tested, challenged, and reinforced throughout my life. I believe I have been true to them, but after reading my story, I leave it to you to judge for yourself.
